What is the difference in a fixed-blade and a folding knife?

How to Navigate With or Without a Compass?

Although a compass does not tell you where you're going, it can help you get back to your home in case you lose your bearings.

Three different ways you can navigate are available:

  1. By landmarks
  2. Use a compass to find magnetic North
  3. By stars

These are objects you recognize immediately when you come across them. These can be trees, buildings, rivers, and so on. Landmarks are useful because they provide a visual clue to where you are.

Magnetic North simply means the direction where the Earth’s magnetic field points. The sun appears to be moving across sky if you look up. However, the earth’s magnetic field actually causes it to move around the Earth. The sun appears to move across the sky but it actually moves around the horizon. At noon, it is directly overhead. The sun is directly below your eyes at midnight. The magnetic field of the earth is constantly changing. This means that the exact direction and orientation of the North pole magnetically changes each day. This can mean that you could be off track for a few days.

Another way to navigate is with stars. The stars appear to rise or set above the horizon. These are fixed points in time that you can use for determining your location relative others.

How can I find the right knife for me?

It is not easy to choose the right knife for you. There are many brands that claim their knives to be the best.

But which one is truly the best? How do you choose?

First, think about the type of tasks you will be using your knife for.

Do you intend to cut wood, skin animals, chop vegetables, or slice bread?

Your knife is it intended for hunting, fishing, or both? Are you going to use it for camping cooking?

Is it going to be used to open bottles or cans of beer? What about opening boxes and packages?

Does your knife need to be strong enough to withstand heavy loads?

Consider cleaning it after each use. Are you planning to wash it often?

Is it necessary to keep its edge over time?
