When the Electricity Goes Out, What Do You Do?

starting fire

When the power goes out, what do you do? Unplug all electrical devices - TV, water heater, computer, etc. It is important to ensure that all smoke and carbon Monoxide detectors work and that the batteries remain fully charged. The next step is to review your family’s emergency plan. Other charging options such as solar, auto and crank chargers are available. Finally, check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. You should follow the instructions of your generator's manufacturer and learn how to use it safely.

Unplug appliances

Unplugging costly electronics can protect them against power cuts. Even if your electronics aren't power-hungry they should still be unplugged if they become sensitive to surges. To protect your electronic devices, you can use surge suppressors. And, of course, don't open your refrigerator! You shouldn't eat any food, even though the power might be restored soon.

Unplug water heater

If your water heater suddenly stops working, unplug from the electric outlet. While this may sound like a simple task, it could lead to a dangerous situation. Fortunately, there are several simple ways to solve this problem. The first is to turn off the power to the unit. Although it may seem difficult, this will prevent any further damage or danger. Continue reading to find out how to unplug a water heater when the electricity goes out.

Unplug computers

It's a common misconception that unplugging computers when the electricity goes out will make them run more efficiently. It is not true that unplugging your laptop will save energy. However, it protects your computer from power surges that can cause damage to your computer. Before you try to unplug the computer when there is no power, be sure to turn off the surge suppressor.

Unplug TV

You should not watch TV if you lose electricity. It is a grave mistake. There are many good reasons to keep your TV on during the evening, but there are also some times when unplugging your television is the safest option. Many modern electrical circuit boards are equipped with protection devices which will trip the electrics if they sense danger. You can also check that the fuses in your TV plug are still functional.

Unplug your air conditioner

If your power outage lasts for a while, unplug the air conditioner. If your AC unit is left unplugged, it can cause irreparable damage. The capacitor that regulates the motor's current can only handle a limited amount of power. If the circuit breaker trips, the capacitor will go bad. The AC can be damaged if it is overloaded, which could lead to the system malfunctioning. Protecting your electrical system against a surge by unplugging it before the power goes out is another way to protect it.

FAQ

What is the single most important thing for survival?

The most important thing you need to survive is food. Shelter from the elements is as important as food. If you don’t eat you won’t live very long.

Why are basic survival skills important?

Basic survival skills include knowing how to protect yourself, make fire, build shelter, hunt, and fish. These skills are essential no matter where we live, but they become even more critical when traveling alone or in remote areas.

Survival skills also include things like first aid, self-defense, navigation, communication, and wilderness medicine. They are invaluable life-saving tools that should be mastered before venturing into the unknown.

While you may not have the time or resources to learn these skills, there are many other useful skills that could be of benefit. If you want to spend your vacation hiking, learn about mountaineering. If you intend to camp in deserts, learn how extreme temperatures can be beaten. There are many ways you can prepare for any situation. So don't be afraid of trying new skills.

What is the most important survival tool should you become lost?

The compass is a tool that tells us where north is. The compass also shows how far you have traveled from your starting point. The compass won't always show you the correct direction if you travel to mountains. However, if you're in a flat area, the compass should be able to show you the way.

A compass is not necessary if you do not have one. You can use an object like a rock, tree or other solid for guidance. However, you can still use a landmark as a way to navigate but it will be easier to determine north.
